What is Momo in Vietnam?

rogergarinmichaud

Hi guys !

Just received a text message from Viettel asking me if I wish to join Momo...

In Tibetan the word Momo is a dumpling as in "chogo Momo" which is similar to the "alu samosa" of India = potatoes dumpling.

So I am not sure what is this Vietnamese "Momo", apparently it helps one to pay for your internet, utilities and the like..

So does anyone on this forum knows anything about it and have you ever used it ?

Thanks for your help !

I asked my GF about Momo. Seems it's a legit offer from Viettel, but she always declines.

We pay direct to the utilities (electricity, internet). Momo offers its members a stipend for using their services, but the "reward" is so small it's a not very persuasive incentive to let yet another entity into one's financial loop.

It is not a VN word.

Offered in English on Google Play.

If I understand it correctly, it is a digital wallet.

Momo is an application used for electronic payment. You can pay for almost everwithing  by scanning the QR-barcodes; you can also navigate in the application and look for food delivery, book a train ticket, cinema, theater, and much. You only need to link your bank account or credit card to your Momo account and it will do the debits for your payments.   There are many popular applications in Vietnam to do the same such as ZaloPay, Grab, VNPay, etc. .  Now, if you don't have a Vietnamese Bank Account and you don't like to have many Đông-paper in your pockets, "Momo" is your best choice. But if you already have a Vietnamese bank account, you can be happy enough with your Bank phone application only

The greatest advantage of using MoMo for payments (as opposed to simply using a banking app) is the special discounts available when paying through MoMo.

The discounts vary from one company to another, but some of the best deals are afforded to users of the GRAB app.

Thanks a lot to everyone for your input.

It seems OceanBeach92107 gave me the idea I was looking for : why downloading a new app when I have already the Grab app on my phone ?

Especially if the rewards of using Momo are as small as mentioned !

Many thanks again to all of you !

Momo in Vietnam refers to MoMo, which is a very popular mobile payment application and e-wallet in Vietnam.

You're right to notice the interesting linguistic connection to Tibetan "momo" dumplings, but in Vietnam, MoMo is entirely different.

- What is MoMo in Vietnam?

MoMo (short for "Mobile Money") is a fintech (financial technology) company that offers a wide range of services through its mobile application. It's essentially an electronic wallet that allows users to:

+ Pay bills: This is one of its most common uses. You can pay for electricity, water, internet, phone bills (including Viettel bills), TV, and more.

+ Top up mobile credit: Easily add credit to your phone number.

+ Transfer money: Send and receive money to and from other MoMo users or even to bank accounts.

+ Pay at stores/restaurants: Many merchants in Vietnam accept MoMo payments via QR codes.

+ Buy movie tickets, flight tickets, train tickets: You can book and pay for various services directly within the app.

+ Online shopping: Pay for goods and services on many e-commerce platforms.

+ Financial services: Some more advanced features include micro-lending, insurance, and investment options.

- Have people used it?

Yes, MoMo is widely used in Vietnam by millions of people. It's one of the leading e-wallets in the country. Many find it very convenient for daily transactions because it's fast, secure, and often offers promotions or cashback.

If you are considering using it, you would typically download the app, link it to your bank account, and then you can start using its services. Many people find it simplifies their daily payments significantly.

Thanks a lot for the very detailed explanation.

Now when you are talking about link to bank accounts is that limited to bank accounts in Vietnam or is that worldwide ?
