DP vs EP -spouse after maternity break ,which is reliable in SG?

dhilipvishwa

Hi all, I’ve been working in Singapore on EP for several years. My wife is a Senior Java/SRE Technical Lead with 10+ years of experience and has previously worked in Singapore for about 2 years. She took a 1.4-year maternity break in India and is now actively interviewing, receiving recruiter calls mainly for DP-based roles, with fewer direct EP opportunities. We’re unsure which path to take and would appreciate advice based on current market conditions:

Option 1: Apply DP now, return to SG, and start working (dependent on my EP)

Option 2: Wait longer in India for a direct EP role (independent visa)

In the current Singapore market, which option is more practical and safer in this scenario?

This is a very good question, and in the end only you (and her) can decide. But here some pointers:

  1. Despite the possibility of remote interviews by videoconference, finding a job from abroad (and especially India) is still much more difficult than when she is already in the country. Most applications without local address immediately land in the bin.
  2. Many companies do not know the possibility of working on DP and/or are not willing to consider it.
  3. Some reject the idea, because it makes the employee less dependable for on them - if you as husband and DP sponsor lose your job, they will immediately also lose your wife as employee!
  4. For this reason (and because DP holders by definition do not depend on the income) she will probably also not get promotions, salary increases and career advances as long as she is on DP.

I thus recommend she comes to Singapore for a job search on DP, but switches to EP when she finds one.

Are you aware that people on DP are no longer authorized to work? Getting a WP used to be a loophole but not sure whether it's still an option

@nelyanne Thanks for your comment - you seem to be correct: The possibility to work on DP (plus a Letter of Consent, LoC) is not available any more on MoM's webpage (except for running your own business on DP):
