What struck you about the Philippines?

Maybe they are just being respectful.
Have you asked the people who live with you why they don't want to be alone in the family room? You put a large screen TV / video games / karaoke, etc. there. People probably assume it's YOUR room and YOUR space. Like your own man-cave. Maybe they're afraid of damaging things. Games can be addicting. Maybe they are avoiding getting addicted to a game.
Consider these:
1. Does your tv have access to Filipino / Korean telenovelas? Or Filipino variety / game shows / news?
2. Karaoke is done with a group, usually with a side of alcohol. It's not done alone. Except maybe if someone's heart just got broken and he/she wants to let it all out by singing Adele's songs.
3. Regarding video games, would you mind if someone beat your high score? Maybe they're seen you play and are better than you. It's more fun to play a video game with another person than alone. (Dance Central 2, anyone?)
If you do want people to use that room, invite them. Subscribe to a channel with telenovelas. Buy a few beers and sing karaoke with them. Be prepared though, because people might start hogging your family room.
I have a separate man cave lol so that isn’t an issue. I do not use the room at all. Of course it has all tv channels along with Netflix, etc. There is a refrigerator with all the selections of alcohol available. I don’t play video games so that isn’t an issue either. There is even a small bedroom for napping/sleeping...but no one will stay there by themselves. That was the original inquiry...why pinoys/pinays will not go anywhere or stay somewhere by themselves.
Is the room sufficiently well lit for clear selfie taking?...maybe that could be one of the main problems.
.
LOL it is....and has Fiber for strong WiFi TicTock submissions hahahaha
Ha ha ha.. you guys are funny.. but it's so true..
Thanks FilAm Mom for the link to the Ban Plastics website.
I see no reason why small re-usable sachet-sacks couldn't be developed from organic materials that would be used to get small quantities of soap or laundry detergent from a dispenser at the local Sari-Sari store. Plenty of materials already available and on the market for this. Like everything else, it just takes some re-thinking of how we do things and presents an opportunity for enterprising people.
The big multi-nationals make a fortune on the single use items, so will fight it tooth and nail and present obstacles as usual. Nothing new there.
Off topic, soz. When my ex wife and I first got together (near 40 years ago) we used to purchase lots of products from the bulk shop as it was cheaper but you had to take your own containers for filling and when empty take them back and refill again. It's fiddly and time consuming but recycling at its best.
These days it seems (myself included) most people have become lazy with an accepted throw away mentality, difficult to turn around for the masses now.
OMO
Cheers, Steve.
Spicy-You posted a question"What struck you about the Philippines?" My answer is I cant afford financially to live anywhere else on my meager soc sec pension.(Especially the USA)Also the cooler weather in Baguio is AWESOME!Low crime. If the schools ever open up again I can easily teach English here in Baguio.JIMMY
Cheryl-I have lived here 9 years. Only thing that really annoys me is Philippinos are toooo nosey. "How old are you? Do you own your own home? Are you married? Do you have any babies?" I love the people here, respect their culture, but they must respect Americans culture also and understand that we will reveal our personal stuff after we,know you a while. The questions I mentioned are when I first meet someone or talk to them and we havent even exchanged names yet. It becomes annoying after a while. It kinda discourages me from talking to any locals because I know what will happen.Baguio Jimmy
Capricorn_it nosey that makes Philippines an interesting place. That's the reason I like them, through that they got to help one and other.

Still doesn't make any sense to me....if you say they litter in the hope that someone else will get employment to clear that litter....So in the same way they may also say lets all go and steal from others so that more people will inturn get to be employed as security guards....or irreseponsible owners letting their dogs wonder the streets at night to poo/bark near other residents property/land...maybe also in a hope that someone will help recruit dog catchers/poo/rubbish cleaners? this cycle of irresponsible behaviour has to stop & proper education is the only way forward.
Its simple logic if you love your country then for heavens sake take care of it & its environment.
Btw I/family members still clear up our own tables after we dine out & also ensure we flush the public toilets after use...people may stare in awe but thats how I was brought up.

And "How much money do you earn/have? How big dick do you have? How often o you do it?" at FIRST meeting e g at a bus
I don¨t bother about nosey questions, them I don't want to answer I just joke away.
To nosey and/or to noicy
I found noicy a much biger problem, although big local differences. I haven't been there so I don't know if it's general but the few I know from around IloIlo are NOT noicy at all. And a foreiner I know who live there say so too.
But city Cebuanos are very noicy say other Filipinos too. E g once I tried to have a conversation with a city Cebuana through internet, her family in same room were SHOUTING to each other NOT angry, that's just their way to try to have more than one conversation in same room at same time by trying to shout louder than the others
The only ones NOT shouting in that room were two toddlers, who didn't even try to say anything, I guess they had gave up
And he bloody motorbike "silencers" which seem to be made to make MORE noice...

I agree. Except partly the part in your text I made bold. I don't believe eduction solve that problemany much. It's suppoused to be solved by logic, but sad to say logic is rare among Filipinos.
Missing logic thinking and not thinking ahead enough make the Philippine MISS to get alot of money they could have earned otherwice.. Although concerning business errors PART of that is missing education, but I know some NOT educated Filipoinas WITH good logic thinking who have done business things much BETTER than the common even high educated with bad logic... It's so common with terrible logic in for instance business "thinking" which is so terrible so I don't even count it as thinking...
Perhaps I will write a book about it or a course, but I believe it would be the LEAST needing who would come to such course by the majority wouldn't even think of they realy need such course
Recently I found a group of small business owners and environmentalists who are GOOD at this allready though, but that's about a small nish subject not much interesting for others except as good examples excist in Phils too
I agree completely about the lack of logic. It's so frustrating for me. The latest example is a new contact tracing app (Higala) that is being implemented in Cagayan de Oro. Basically, you create an account on their system to download a personal QR code to your phone, and you need to have it scanned whenever you enter an establishment. Or you can scan the establishment's QR code and enter basic contact and health information. Sounds reasonable, but ...
1. Their registration system was completely overloaded during the week they announced it until the implementation was supposed to start. I tried to get on for many hours across several days and nights. They had to launch an entirely different site, and then pushed back the implementation by a month. I'm guessing they never heard of cloud computing.
2. To scan an establishment's QR code, you need to do it from within their app. Using a standard QR scanner doesn't work. But I haven't found anywhere to get the app, and they haven't put it on the Apple app store, so downloading it from them would violate the iPhone's terms and conditions.
3. They only scan you going into an establishment, so they have no idea how long you are there, and therefore no idea whether you were there at the same time as, or (in the case of a larger facility like a shopping mall) whether you were in close proximity to, a person that is later (3 to 5 days?) determined to be infected.
4. This app is only being used in the Cagayan de Oro area, so anyone visiting from outside will be put through the hell of trying to register in real-time if they want to enter a restaurant or shop.
So they put almost the entire population of a big city, as well as almost every business, through a very stressful ordeal for a system that is doomed to fail. And they're doing it a year too late, and just months before a majority of the population gets vaccinated (fingers crossed). Or, as some of my more paranoid ex-pat friends believe, it's just another way for the government to track its citizens. Personally, I won't give the government that much credit.

Nosey or Friendly in the Philippines is a thin line that migrates back and forth.
Now the friendlies people I ever met were in West Virginia.
Example number one: Attending Wheeling Island Race Track (Dog Races) In the men's room, standing at the urinal it's was not uncommon for the person next to you asking who you like in the next race.
(Give you idea about Wheeling Island Race Track, their special promotions giveaway is a used car.)
Example number two: While training a new salesperson, we went to the small town, Fairmont, West Virginia. Home of Mary Lou Retton, the little fire plug who won a gold metal in the 1984 Oylmpics. The town had to remove the sign: The home of Mary Lou Retton because people were stealing them.
Well anyways, the trainee & myself were dressed in business attire, it was so hot we left our jackets off and just had shirts and ties on. We would walk into a business, the people were so friendly, they would come out and ask us "Salesmen? What do you want to sell us". I never experienced such a high close rate, about 50% on cold calls.
Now making the same cold calls in Chicago, as soon as they saw a Shirt &Tie, some would ask buying or selling? I would tell them selling and some would tell me "Get the F out of here".

I believe you are wrong. Education teaches and enhances logic. Has to start the day a child is born, switched on progressive parents. As Julius Sumner Miller said constantly "why is it so". I say and only my opinion but an enquiring mind in a nourished existence fosters logic. OMO but this is not about money or business ethics that comes later with learning and being a responsible and ethical human being.
This post is about "What struck you in the Philippines". Or there abouts. For me it was the smell when I walked out of the airport nearly 10 years ago, I am a plumber by trade, logistics manager the last 25 years and I know the stench. A night in the New World hotel and back into the abyss, fly to Naga and assaulted yet again, my outlaws house is the same on the street. The rubbish is the same most places, here where we live there is a semblance of social awareness and responsibility, no smells and little rubbish, beach cleaned every few weeks. (yes we do our bit).
The new/now we live here "what struck you about the Philippines" was my partner, his family and the every day frustrating culture that shares so much and asks for nothing. I read other posts about tsismis and how it gets up peoples noses, Sometimes I wish just for a new conversation. Never have I been asked or suffered an inquisition here, other countries yes.
The good points here outweigh the bad if you have a reason to be here. If we come back to coach53's ideals? I'm sure your book will be a best seller, all in all given your input and inventive mind you will succeed here with your business ventures many. BTW I'm looking fwd to hearing of your prosperity now the business has (after all the problems) been successfully registered. Go get em coach.
Cheers, Steve.

Well. You are right IF they are tought to think themselves and question things. Such sure excist, I have seen a bit such when I have tried to assist PARENTS to do their KIDS assignments. Teachers had even told the parents to do them , because the kids in that school were during two weeks occupied with exersising to a PERFORMANCE instead of studying!!!
And all this time they spend at beauty contests even in small kids sschools!!!
tought the outside is the important... Beauty contests for grown ups in "every" village. . (After wonn Miss World and such Sweden more or less skiped even MIss Sweden 20 years ago, becaise it became a parody when beauty skiped to participate so some years just an average Swede looking wonn...
Some such asignments for small kids were so fuzzy so parents and I sometimes - even with max logic thinking
- couldn't figuere out what the teacher wanted the kids to do...
I blame the church - and schools in big parts follow the church n the basic "It's the truth, because it's written in the bible"
"Do as God and leaders tell you to do.." (I don't know how they say it in Phils, with which words, but I kknow them in Swedish.) Sweden had similar problem with religion 200-100 years ago. During that period were many of the worst cases "exported" to USA
so it became some less hard for Sweden to build up logic thinking and question the power without being punnished for it. Now less than 10 % of Swedes get their thinking messed up by religion...
I have told Filipinos how Sweden solved the problem with very few have allmost all the power. In Phils now the 10 richest familiies have 80-90 % of the parlament. 110 years ago in Sweden the workers TOOK much power by much protesting, strikes, startiing a workers party - and vote for it.... Since then that workers party have been the bigest party mostly, nowadays having rather close to 50 % of the votes. So Phils have a long way to solve that.

Best seller and/or deportation depending of which sensitive subjects I write about
A speed course I suppouse can avoid to sensitive subjectsjust being about Business econoomy, but not if include the roots off the problems.
The business registration is still at the second of 16* steps
(I will write about that in the special topic about that.)
*I haven't counted if there are still 16 steps since they made "Business Centres" but that made shorter to walk in between

AL 77-In my opinion you have ZERO chances of getting a job here under these pandemic conditions. Jobs here in the Philippines go to Philippinos FIRST.ONLY when a specific employment opportunity can NOT be filled by a Philippino will you be accepted. Work permit is required. Stringent qualifications. You might research a South American country or Middle east country.JIMMY
