Hello there, Kamusta!

deanknowles

Gday all, Dean here from Australia (Tasmania). I started international travel rather late, with one trip to Thailand in 2010. After another 10 years of no travel, I discovered the Philippines and have made 10 trips in the last 4 years! I am not quite retirement age but fully intend to look at retirement there.

Meantime, I work as an IT consultant, teacher/trainer and digital marketing specialist (web sites, e-commerce etc). I also love coffee and describe myself as a poor man's barista haha.

I'd love to engage with people who might offer suggestions and even opportunities to base myself there.

Thanks for the opportunity to join, and i look forward to meeting a lot of you in the future.

Cheers, Dean

Welcome to the forum Dean, Aussie here from the sunny coast, Originally Victoria but not been back for 7 years and reality? Don't miss Oz one bit, PH. is my home now and no regrets. Filipino partner for 14 years led me here with no regrets.

Working/looking for a job here comes with many dangers and needs to be accomplished correctly or you may end up in the slammer,,,,, not very nice in a third world country.

I like most here did our hard yards in our home countries and then retired here for many reasons whether partner or a cheaper life or simple escape, we all have stories.

Enjoy the forum and the chats with the members here and good luck mate.

Cheers, Steve

G'day Dean .. am another retired Aussie here.

Would suggest you look at https://ph.jobstreet.com/

They have many jobs advertised in the Philippines. Also tips on local Job Searching, creating your website Profile, Career Advice, Exploring Companies, also a useful forum community. The website should get you up and running regarding your intended Philippines local job-market 😃

Cheers mate

Did anyone see Dean asking about working in the Philippines?

Welcome aboard, Dean. I retired here from Los Angeles six years ago, and wouldn't change a thing.

You'll get plenty of advice from this forum, some of it actually valuable. And some irrelevant.

It seems to offer more than some see.

The OP stated he was not yet of retiring age, so a possible option might very well be working for a few years in his desired country before calling it a day.

Your contribution strikes me as a top post as it shows there is more than one way to skin a cat.

10 trips in the last 4 years from Tasmania Dean. You must be in clover with the airmiles you have collected.

May I enquire how long each visit was? The majority of contributors on this Forum will recall the pre internet days of travel agent brochures when every tourist destination looked idyllic. Well the Philippines is idyllic when you are on vacation mode. The acid test is living there for a year at least if only to savour the torrential never ending wet season downpours along with 25 Typhoons on average. The good news is that not all are signal 5.

You state that you are a digital marketing specialist and are seeking ‘opportunities’ to work there before retirement. The cardinal rule in most emerging developing countries such as the Philippines is that you will not make a sufficient income to live comfortably unless you are working for a large corporation on contract or indeed employed on assignment. The tone of your text suggests that you would be self employed. There are millions of self employed Filipina’s on Facebook that describe themselves as ‘digital creators’ so you will be in good company; at least in title if nothing else.

There are many pre-retired souls who have visited the Philippines over the years with no unearned fixed income hoping to ‘wing it ’ until retirement. Most end up broke, screwed (in both senses of the word) and occasionally destitute on the streets.

You’re a coffee guy like me so know the difference between Arabica & Robusta. I have just returned from a business assignment in Jakarta and can assure you that Javanese coffee is far superior to that I have tasted in the Philippines.
