Is Kuching an underrated city for retirement in Malaysia?

Hi everyone,

I’m based in Kuching, Sarawak, and I’ve always been interested in hearing how expatriates and retirees view different cities in Malaysia.

When people talk about retirement destinations in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor are often mentioned. However, Kuching seems to receive much less attention, despite offering a rather different lifestyle.

From my perspective as someone living here, Kuching offers a slower pace of life, a multicultural environment, relatively manageable living costs, good food, healthcare facilities and easy access to nature.

Of course, it may not suit everyone. Some people may prefer the convenience and international connectivity of Kuala Lumpur or the larger expatriate communities in Penang.

I’m curious to hear from others who have visited or lived in Kuching:

• What did you like or dislike about Kuching?

• Would you consider it for retirement?

• What factors matter most when choosing a city in Malaysia?

It would be interesting to hear different perspectives and experiences.
