Love the City, my apartment and the school. The people are very friendly and I feel very safe here. The mountains still take my breath away every morning when I go to work. However, I am surprised that not many locals can speak any English at all. I was under the impression that if anything, it is the opposite that is the norm. Still, I am enjoying my Russian lessons and hope to carry on learning Russian online so that I may start to use it in everyday life.

Hi Darren - do you mind me asking where you are teaching? I am thinking of moving to Almaty (from UK) soon and am interested on any tips for schools - both as we have school (primary) age kids, and because my wife is a teacher who may look for work in the coming year. Any info on what you think of your school (and/or its competitors) would be really welcome. Thanks, Adam

I work at the Miras International School of Almaty, a private ed. school. There are plenty of schools here but mostly state schools and unfortunately I have no inside information of how good they are or how to get a job with one.

Have you considered signing up with a job agency? That's how I got my job here,
