Vegetables only found in Mauritius

Anne-Lise Mty

Hi again everyone,

Still for the Expat Mag, I'd love to know what vegetables and fruits you've encountered in Mauritius that you had never seen elsewhere! Lalo? Calebasses?

Let us know in the comments!

And again, have a great week end!

I saw patty pans and jackfruit for the first time in Mauritius in 1986 when on holiday from South Africa (now, 35 years later, they are also for sale in South Africa) that is not to say they were Endemic to Mauritius or only available there.

Hi Anne -Lise,
None the fruits and vegetables we have in Mauritius are actually unique to Mauritius as they have all been imported by the human colonizers and through immigration. However many of them have developed some unique characteristics as they have adapted in the course of time to their new Mauritian environment and developed into local varieties or landraces(as they are called) or have grown wild and evolved into new species.  We have Banane Zengli which is said to unique to Mauritius. There are wild relatives of eggplant in Mauritius too just to cite these two examples. There are many varieties of mangoes that are said to be local varieties. However no real studies have been made to say for sure if they are indeed unique or not.

Hope this helps.

All the plants mentioned by contributors ( Brede mouroum, jack fruits etc.) are all imported and found in many other parts of the tropics.  They are not endemic to Mauritius.
Mauritius was inhabited before and only recently colonized and human has not had the time to domesticate our plants.
Ah! perhaps except the hurricane palm (and other native palms for than matter ) which have been exploited for many uses including the palm heart for food. I forgot about that!!
Cheers
