Update on exchange of driving licence from Uk to Mauritius

lesmar54

I went as described with all my papers to the Traffic Branch last week to change my UK Licence to Mauritius Drivers Permit and it was rejected for two reasons

[1] I needed a photocopy of the page in the passport where I last entered Mauritius.

[2] I needed an Attested(apostile) copy of my driving licence which means the Green paper copy.

I am not sure if these are recent changes to the regulations on this matter or that some officers decide that they want more information than others

[1] Yes, that's pretty reasonable requirement, nothing special. If I remember correctly there is a question in the form what asks for date of arrival.

[2] You can ask your embassy to confirm that paper you provide is a valid driving license. It should contain your name, passport number, driving license number and  class(es) of vehicle(s) you're allowed to drive including their verbal description, e.g. "Class B (Motor cars)".

My papers were approved two weeks ago and I'm only waiting for the license to be printed.

What is the 'green paper' that is requested?

I assume this is the paper counterpart to the UK driving licence card, but the former was abolished on 8 June 2015:

Very confusing!

I exchanged my UK license earlier in the year.

Apart from the usual things I needed:

(a) A statement from the DVLA confirming my license. I just phoned them up and they emailed me a pdf which was accepted.

(b)  The 'green papers' is that when I exchanged by old UK paper driving license for my new UK photo license DVLA issued me with the photo license together with the 'green paper license' which fortunately I kept. This was titled 'Counterpart Driving License'. This was inspected and returned.

I know it’s a stupid question, but when you ‘convert’ your uk driving license to a Mauritian one, does this mean you can no longer use your uk license?

@nav56

I have often wondered about this. Why give up your UK licence? I might as well do the test and get a Mauritian licence in addition.

@Tookays

If that is really the case (I don’t think it is) it would be best to take the test there..

Yes, the DVLA says that this document has no legal status since 2015 and if you have one if should be destroyed. I can't understand how Mauritian authorities are asking for it as most people don't have it and can't even get it. I wonder will they accept a print of the 'licence summary' that you can get when you wish to share your licence details from the DVLA website. I did get the DVLA to send me a 'licence confirmation' document before I left the UK, but I haven't used it here yet and am still driving on a combination of my UK licence and an IDP.

nav56

Thks for this.

How do you get the dvla to send you a ´license confirmation ´ document pls.

@nav56

I think you can request it on their website or ask by email. I did one of these, but can't remember which, I didn't phone them for sure. Anyway, it's a pretty standard request and they'll send it out after you request it.

Thank you so much KC

Will do so before I travel back to Mauritius
