Nairobi in June

Guest8645

Hi there!

I am planning a 15-20 day (maybe even a month!) trip to Nairobi. I saw a trip because it is mostly to see a friend there. I am not 'that' crazy about going on a safari, which is why I am posting here. Any advice or comment on how things are (weather, people, safety) in Nairobi would be helpful. I do like to explore with my camera and on foot so I am sure I will be doing a lot of that.

Thank you for your time and maybe I'll see you around when I am there!

Cheers,

Yamini

Hi Yamini...
Its a great idea your taking time to visit this beautiful country.
Ideally it is a safari heaven and even though your not too keen on going on safari I know of several places that will change your mind. Currently we are experiencing heavy rain, which is good as last year we were suffering drought. Only draw backs of the heavy rain is the frequent power black outs and heavy traffic. Kenyans are a multi cultural are known for their hospitality and friendliness albeit towards white tourists mainly, however nothing to fear about. Every city around the world has its good and bad. If you are going to be photographing the city and sites on foot i strongly suggest 2 things, one - get a good guide, not some street hussler - but a good street guide, and two - secure your camera and belongings well. Be very careful which areas you visit. There are some no go zones for tourists. What would be particularly your area of interest. Perhaps I can then give you a brief of where to go and not to go. Safety your ok depending on the areas your in. Will you be staying with your friend or at a hotel or? Weather as explained its slightly wet, but its fine equator weather...
hope the above helps

@ yayacenter: thank you for extending your help!

@ kenyandesi: this is great information! Everyone keeps telling me that it might not be too safe for me to do my exploring on foot, but it's good to know that it depends on the neighborhood. Pretty much like anywhere I guess!

I wasn't planning on getting a guide - just a map and some recommendations from people who live there. Which are the no go zones? I like shooting mostly buildings, market-streets, any place that has a lot of color, water bodies, pubs etc. Thanks again!

hey.. no worries...
well when exactly are you coming down... do u have a pick up and place to stay..?
if you have that sorted then you can work from there.
most historical stuff and buildings / monuments are located in the city centre. be careful what you click at as some govt building you cannot take photographs of. Pubs those are plenty.. water bodies again many.. rift valley lakes to nbo to the coast..
You could get a map and do what your saying however NBI is a huge city so again it depends on where you want to be.if you dont mind what you can do is mail me on pritconsultke@gmail.com
and i can give you more info ..
