It will never be good news until COVID has gone completely..

Oh, really?  That's just like your opinion, man.

This thread is an acknowledgment of the progress being made in many places around our planet.  The fact that some places are lagging in vaccinations or in the reduction of cases and deaths does not take away from that progress.

Maybe follow the news around the world and you will learn!!!!

Fred

My heart always hopes for and sees a bright sunny future, or at least just the right amount of rain.
Indonesia is seeing cases plummet and business reopening - Bali isn't there just yet, but it will in time.

After death, illness and financial mess, the worst thing about covid was idiotic politicians using it to score points - They've all pretty much shut their fat traps now - Very good news

Cynic

Meanwhile, back in the UK, I had my Covid booster jab a few days ago; no side effects at all.  I had my flu jab the following day, my arm was a bit sore the day after, but that has gone this morning.

Locally, infection rates are going up, but luckily the rates of hospitalisation and death have not, so no prospect of returning to the former restrictions.

New covid pill an 89 percent success for those at-risk.

Pfizer has called an early end to its mass-testing of a new pill designed to drastically reduce the chance that an individual at high risk may become hospitalized or die from covid.

The early results indicated an 89 percent reduction in potential hospitalization or mortality among the test subjects -- high-risk individuals.

The testing was curtailed so that the 50 percent of participants taking a placebo would not have to continue consuming it given that the test results for the 50 percent taking the super-pill showed great effectiveness against severe covid.

This was double good news for folks investing in covid cure companies.  Pfizer stock's value rose 11 percent.  The Dow-Jones Industrial Average, now above 36,000, and the S&P 500 index reached new highs.  The Wall Street news was credited to the Pfizer development and strong USA-employment figures released on Friday.

Fortunately,
Not only Pfizer but some other Pharmaceutical Companies are also researching on the 'COVID pill' treatment.

News are promising, however we have to keep in mind that:
The COVID pill treatment is only available yet in a few scattered selected worldwide Main Central Hospitals around the globe.

Covid news and stocks.

U.S. markets were up sharply today (December 7, 2021), partly based on indications that the omicron strain will be weaker than previously feared.  The market overall has recovered all its losses from omicron fears of last week that had prompted some of the YouTube geniuses to predict that markets were crashing or about to crash.

Today the benchmark S&P 500 index was up 2.1 percent.  The NASDAQ composite was up 3 percent.  The Dow-Jones industrial average was up almost 500 points.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued an emergency authorization for the first time for an anti-covid pill to prevent severe reactions to the virus.  It's for persons ages 12 and over.

The pill will eventually be available to "tens of millions of Americans," according to the New York Times writeup of the FDA announcement.

At 89 percent effectiveness against severe disease for older people and those with pre-existing conditions (such as diabetes or obesity), the pill is considered more effective than a Merck pill that has not yet received FDA approval.

Economics surprise.

The U.S.A. experienced a faster economic recovery this year than the other advanced countries of the West.

The 2021 stimulus payments from the government  totaling over $5-trillion US are credited for the strong recovery.  These payments generally were sent directly to bank accounts of recipients, on average doubling the balances in U.S. personal bank accounts.

This is also an excellent time to obtain work, as U.S. jobs are going 'begging'.  However, it may take years for the jobs/employment picture to fully straighten out.

Hotez vaccine gets first approval.

Senior health officials in India have given approval to a team of Houston-based vaccine experts to distribute their newly-developed covid vaccine.

The vaccine developers are Dr. Peter Hotez of the Baylor College of Medicine and his longtime partner, Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi.  They develop low-cost vaccines that the major vaccine producers typically do not produce for economic reasons.

On MSNBC, Dr. Hotez said this week that it is essential that such vaccines are made available throughout the Southern Hemisphere in light of the high transmissibility of omicron/covid.

Dr. Hotez is the dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor and co-director of Texas Children's Hospital.

LatAm turnaround.

Six months ago (June/July 2021) about half the world's covid deaths had been reported by countries in Latin America.

Now, the percentage of worldwide deaths from the virus is down to ten percent in the region.

High vaccination rates, especially in Ecuador and Chile, are credited for the turnaround.

USA covid numbers dive.

In the past two weeks, daily reported cases dropped 48 percent in the U.S.

Reported daily deaths (which were 1,291 two weeks ago) have dropped 31 percent.

Only one mainland state, Idaho, is marked in red as a covid hotspot on the newspaper of record's map as viewed on its daily e-feed.

Airlines start dropping mask rules.

Some major airlines in Europe -- including KLM and Virgin Atlantic -- have announced plans to eliminate passenger requirements to wear masks on their flights during The Situation .. and top US-based carriers want to follow suit.

The chief executives of American and United Airlines, among others, have asked President Biden to drop the current mask mandates, saying that masks are not necessary due to the improved, current realities of the virus situation.

VERY OLD news, but I would hardly say it's good news!!!

Its stupid news

Julien

come on guys, no dispute please.

Masks are no longer mandatory in many public places in France, and well, after 12 days the country obviously experiences a resurgence in cases. My mother told me 75% of people are still wearing masks in supermarkets.

It is time for choice based on individual risk. You want/need to wear a mask…no one will object. For the rest of us, we deserve the same respect in our choice to not mask.

abthree

03/31/22 Eh, it depends ...

If you walk around oudoors maskless, nobody should hassle you.  If you cause a ruckus about wearing a mask on an airplane while it's still mandatory, requiring you to travel by bus for the rest of your natural life is absolutely reasonable.  Between those two extremes, there's a universe where individual freedom, respect for others, and common sense can meet in many constructive ways and negotiate compromises acceptable to any people of good will.

beppi

Wearing a mask mainly shields OTHERS from YOUR infection (which might be symptomless!).
Thus this is one of the few examples that CANNOT be left to individual choice by self-centered ***.

Dear Island Dweller,

Since posting that your "immune system is down" and the flu or covid would "finish (you) off," your posts on this thread have become worrying, even disturbing.

Since you are an at-risk individual in self-quarantine, I suggest that you immediately call the hotline in your area and ask for help.

Covid rates plummet in Latin America.

From Associated Press...

Positive covid test results have dropped to five percent or less in many places in Latin America, prompting the easing of restrictions.

"Plummeting infection rates in Latin America have countries eliminating restrictions on mass gatherings, lifting some travel requirements and scrapping mask mandates that have been in place for two years.

"The region has been hard hit by the pandemic, with countries like Brazil and Peru registering some of the world's largest death tolls.  But cases and deaths fell this month (April 2022) to lows resembling levels last seen in the first two months of the pandemic.  For many countries, the case count is substantially less than those in North America and Europe."
