This is a problem I see every day on this website. People say they want to meet friends, but rarely say more than "hey", "what's up". Why not say something about yourself? "Hello" is a great way to start a conversation, but that word alone is not a conversation in itself.

To be fair, this problem isn't exclusive to this website. Many people don't know how to introduce themselves, or hold a conversation.

This is true. Introverts must find it especially difficult to move abroad. I cannot imagine the moves I have made without the new friendships and supportive people around me.

It is also ironic. Most of the world uses social media to some degree, yet many do not know how to start a conversation with strangers.

I wouldn't automatically assume that introverted people have a hard time making friends. In fact, I make a few who know how to connect to people. It's just that they do not need as much 'stimulation' as their more extroverted counterparts would. It may also be the case that they travel to places in a different way.

The problem with online connections is that it removes most of the things that matter in face-to-face conversations, like facial expressions and other gestures. You may sound smooth when communicating through a screen but be frozen otherwise. In person, we react to another person's facial expressions or the tone when talking. That's hardly honed when talking online.
