At the moment, I'm using a rather nice Fujifilm S4500

but it lacks the ability to use an external microphone when making videos.
This is proving to be a bit of a pain as I have to record sound separately and try to sync it later.
That in mind, I'm after something new that does have a microphone jack.

Not an SLR as I simply don't need what they do.
Preferably uses AA batteries as I can'd be bothered to carry chargers around.
Big zoom - Mine has 30x optical so that's the minimum.

Suggestions?

Fred, you don't have to go full pro with an SLR, there are quite a few entry level SLRs that will do the trick, and they all have mic jacks.

its not even an SLR, its a cannon power shot series, you might like it, dont know whats your budget though

I've just had a peek at the manual and that, whist it is very nice and has a 50X optical zoom (wet dream time), it doesn't have the external mic input.
My budget will be decided by a a person who will get benefit from my having the camera and it's likely to be something over US$1,000 (including all the extras).

That's the real beauty of this, it won't cost me a penny (If they agree).
