A telephone call

Cesar Vial

Hello,

something very rare happens to me a few days ago. I was in my car on going to the job site, and I receive a phone call from a lady that manage all my data: full name, company name, country of origin, my address in Nigeria, my e-mail, etc., never identifies herself and have a very nice British accent. Should be a scamer, I don't know and it doesn't matter. What is really concern is how much information they had about me, because just a few places had my info, one of this is this blog........

Still worry...

Hi Cesar,

this is indeed a scammer.

As this is your very first & single message on Expat.com, how could that person have collected any info from you here ?

Cesar Vial

Hello Julien, thanks for your answer. And just because your comment is a worry situation, because the other place where is all my info is the company where I work, and it is suppose a safe info, and the other one are the Nigerian authorities of immigration. In some way these scamers can access the data base of any of these entities, I am not saying surely the info come from this place but could happens, so it is necessary to be careful. That it is my only intention.
Once again thanks a lot for your answer and best regards.

You're very welcome ;)

Have you ever posted your phone number here or on any other website ?

James

Hello All,

Over the years that I've been a member of Expat-blog and other public international forums I've lost count of the number of times I have seen other members post their personal information, name, company name, website, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses to topic threads.

This practice is an open invitation to become the potential victim of spammers and scammers. It is exactly for this reason that almost all forums warn their members never to post such information; they do so for good reason. Yet, the practice continues with devastating results. In almost every case the victims complain to the forums and after careful investigation the cause of the problem is traced back to the member themselves who have posted sensitive information that they should not have.

There are those (and you will see them every day here) who believe that simply changing the "@" in an e-mail address to something like john.doe[at]anymail.com will protect them, but they are quite wrong. Spam engines are programmed to translate this [at] and they quickly pluck all posted addresses from the system. Other scammers simply scan the threads and do the translation manually. Same thing happens with phone numbers and the like.

If you want to see just how vulnerable you really are, just type your full name into Google and see how much information comes back about you; you will be shocked. Most of it, you've put out there on the internet yourself!

NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES POST PRIVATE INFORMATION ON ANY FORUM

This is the only way to protect yourself from situations as described by Cesar Vial

Hi Cesar Vial,

A quick check shows that one, you posted the name of your company in your Expat-blog Profile.

Also checking Google, you have entered a lot of information on your Linkedin account profile. This is why you have become a target. You must remember that you are in a country that is notorious for all kinds of scams, you have not taken the necessary precautions to protect yourself, I'm sorry to say.

Cheers,

No posts job
It'll either be porn, prostitution or a scam of some sort, wanting me to send money for some operation or other such rubbish.
That or an amazing business offer where I'll get 5,000% interest on a dead Nigerian king's fortune if only I sign a direct debit.

Smells like blocked like a drain after a curry.

I think this guy is implying that this site is somehow scamming him.  It all sounds like a scam to me.
