The Expat Mag Mauritius is back with its creole expressions to help you blend in. This week, we are looking at the expression ‘Lalang aplodi'.

‘Lalang aplodi' literally means ‘My tongue is clapping'. Can you guess in what context it is traditionally used? Similar to how you clap after a particularly good show, at a concert or after something you particularly liked has happened, we use the term ‘lalang aplodi' to communicate our appreciation for food. If one has liked a meal, they can say ‘mari bon!' (Translation: Very good) but after an exquisite meal, one will rather say ‘lalang aplodi', meaning ‘it was so good even my tongue is clapping!'
