In 2019, the Municipal Register of Inhabitants of the city of Barcelona revealed that half of its residents were foreign-born. The city is one of the world's most multicultural and there are deliberate efforts by the City Administration to promote this. This week, the city is organizing the Barcelona Expat week. How is immigrating to Barcelona going to change and what is the Barcelona Expat week?

Different countries and cities' response to the sanitary and economic crisis has been different. And Barcelona does not seem to want to curb immigration. With the organization of this event, Barcelona council gives an idea of the approach to the post-COVID era with regards to how welcoming the city intends to be to foreigners.

Right now, it is difficult to plan an expatriation anywhere. Even if you are a European citizen, the job market is changing in Europe with the sanitary and economic crisis. For example, jobs in tourism have obviously considerably decreased since the beginning of the crisis. In this post-COVID era, however, jobs in the technology and innovation sector, in the health sector seem to be on the rise. The different promising fields will be discussed during the conference.

If one thing has become really important following the crisis, it is health services. Indeed, a consideration that might drastically change expats' decision regarding the destination. This might mean better consideration of health insurance policies or looking for more insight into the destination's healthcare services. And Catalonia has been very proactive with dealing with the sanitary crisis, converting sports centers and hotels into healthcare centers. The region has also been able to provide staff by hiring student doctors, retired doctors and nurses.
