Hey DeltaGirl!  The short answer : yes!  I am also new to Shenzhen and went to an open mic recently (in CoCo Park - Rapscallions Bar).  I met lots of awesome peeps from the States - yes including African-Americans (I also asked if indeed there was a community in Shenzhen haha).  It was a great time.  It happens every Thursday night.
