Accommodation in Riyadh

If you intend to settle in Riyadh, here are some tips to help you find accommodation in this major Saudi city.

Riyadh has been attracting foreigners worldwide for many years for the numerous professional opportunities it offers. Hence, it also offers a range of accommodation options including residential compounds, some of which are owned by companies recruiting foreigners. On your arrival, you are more likely to reside in a compound unit. But after some time, you will be allowed to shift to an independent accommodation. Make sure to be aware of the related conditions as per your employment contract and about those regarding independent lease.

 Good to know:

Most expatriates in Riyadh have preferred to settle in the North. You will mostly find residential compounds there. As regards the well-off families, most of them live in and around the city center.

Types of accommodation

An interesting factor about residential compounds is that foreigners are able to enjoy more freedom than they would in some other regions. In fact, they are entitled to a more Western type of social life, free from Islamic rules. Thus, men and women are allowed to participate in common activities. They can even drive and go out without having to wear the abaya.

Moreover, residential companies are modern and autonomous, providing many facilities such as gyms, tennis courts, etc. Note that these are generally located close to schools, companies and hospitals, etc. But you can also find independent villas and apartments for rent.

Find accommodation

During you accommodation search in Riyadh, you are advised to view "Riyadh Today", a housing guide which has been published by the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce. You can find it in most bookstores along with a list and description of compounds available across the city. You may also view housing offers on the Internet, or rely on word-of-mouth if you have friends and contacts in the city.

 Good to know:

As Riyadh is a very developed and active city, accommodation offers may be lower than demands. You had better be patient.

Finally, registering with a real estate agency will not only help you find appropriate accommodation according to your criteria but also tackle with related procedures such as understanding and signing the lease documents.

Rent prices

If you prefer to rent apartments with security, you will need an average of $ 7,800 per year. As regards villas, which are usually very luxurious, you will need between $ 13,000 and $ 130,000 for rent.

Moreover, you will need an average of $ 6,000 per year to rent a single-bedroom apartment in the city center and some $ 4,000 to rent a three-bedroom apartment in the outskirts. For a three-bedroom apartment, you will need some $ 10,000 in the city center and around $ 7,000 in the outskirts.

Note that prices generally vary according to the type of accommodation, comfort level facilities and services attached, etc.
