Hello,

My name is Konstantina and i live in Greece. I will move to Stockholm in 2022. I already have started courses in swedish so as to be prepared for this big step. I have a 8 years old son and i am concerned about his adjustment to the new country and environment.
I  would like to know whether will i have to register my son in a swedish school at once or if there are any "special" schools  for immigrant children?
Moreover does anyone know if there are even some kind of courses in Stockholm that can attend so as to help him learn the language as soon as we get there?

Thanks in advance

Hello, Yes you have to register him right away, otherwise they will force you to register him to some school anyway, because that is the law, age 6 to 16 must attend school. There are special classes to help students with different issues for instance Swedish language as in this case but it happens in the same school or under the supervision of same school management, to have special schools for children of immigrants would only violate the constitution of the country therefore such do not exist.

To teach children you need to have a National certification issued by the relevant authority and in order to obtain it one need to have a special pedagogical training that is standard all over Sweden, so even if you against all odds find some kind of help course for children you should not attend your child to a someone who does not have the National certification or correlative competence.

When it comes to his adjustment to the country I would say it is better to make the move sometime around the late spring- May, so he has enough time to adjust before the darker time of the year late autumn- November which can be depressive sometimes. And most of your "big step" will be very easy and smooth if the kommun you are going to move in to is better, I mean all are forced to be good as a standard, while some of them are really better. All the best!

Thank you so much for your help and for the information!

The only thing that makes me afraid of is the adjustment of my son with the new language and the new environment. I will take note of your useful advice.

I hope for the best for me and him!!
Thank you again!!!

Don't worry about it! When my sister's three children came to Sweden from Sri Lanka (almost the same kind of weather as in Greece) they were 12, 10 and 5 years old, everything went perfectly fine, they learned the language very fast and adjusted to the cold weather without a problem.

April or May is good for the move because of it is sunny and pretty much ok weather, there is no need of winter clothing, shoes and all the winter outfits. And also few other reasons; A) He will have roughly 10-12 weeks left of the school year 21/22, and it will also be his (as a 9 year old) last year (literally speaking weeks) of  Låg stadiet primary level. (Given that you fix personnummer of yours right away)

B) The school probably will offer him a summer course for Swedish language so he will have enough time to catch up with the language so that he can be well prepared for the school year 22/23 in Mellan stadiet Intermediate level. Before you decide for a school you can check with all the schools, whether they would offer him a summer course or not, you should have it as your bench mark when you choose a school. In fact you can have this discussion with schools already before the move, you can write to them).

If anything you need to know just ask! pleasure is mine and there is no such thing as stupid question :)
