How to know if your NIE is still valid ?

Dear all,
I hope you are well.

I am french and I am about to get a job in Spain near Barcelona.

I've already been to Spain, in Alicante, or an internship in 2017 and got there my NIE and Número de Seguridad Social.

I don't know if they are still valid. I guess there is a procedure to follow to renew it, but do I have to get it back from the beginning? Does the number still exist?

Thank you for your help, wishing you a great day

I would phone the tax office. They are more than willing o take tax off you, so the NIE should still work. It is better to find out there, with a long distance call from France.

When you say ‘NIE' you are referring to your fiscal number (white A4 certificate) or the green certificate showing your EU Citizen registration ?

People commonly incorrectly refer to an ‘NIE' when they mean proof of residence status. So a green certificate held by an EU national after 2/4/07, or a plastic photo residence card held by a non EU National before that date.

Very different,  albeit often confused

NIEs once issued last as long as the user does. It's just an ID number.

My wife worked in Spain in 1990. When we applied for NIEs, before we moved here, in about 2003, the printout for my wife's number showed her old Madrid address.
