Thomas Cook - Another Blow to DR Tourism Coming?

https://news.sky.com/story/thomas-cook- … e-11814043

If Thomas Cook don't sort out their problems with last ditch efforts, then some 150,000 Brits and Europeans will have to be flown back home from their holidays abroad as the company goes into administration.

This will affect those on holiday in DR and the reps. that live here, and so there would be another knock on effect to tourism here in the short term.

Wow another one in financial difficulty.

So are they a travel agency that owns an airline? If they did go under, people could still fly commercial could they not?

These are people who paid for complete vacations, they are tour operators.  Some people may not have the money for a new one way ticket and there may not be flights direct to their.locations. it get complicated and expensive.

It is a broad travel group with it's own airline operating out of a number of European countries.

It does not look good and maybe it could go into administration within hours:

Major exercise in flying in prospect for all those holiday makers including in DR who bought vacation packages. And of course the Thomas Cook staff based here in DR will be without a job as well as those that service their aircraft flying here.

It's a big deal short term, absolutely!  Long term let's hope they sort it out or someone else steps into this market.

One of their issues is their refund policy - they refund and partial refund for just about any complaint!  I am sure there are a lot of other issues as well.

Hi
so do i understand people who spending the vacation in DR are flown back to their home because not having  visa or what?

The customers would have booked a package holiday including hotel and flights. If the Company becomes insolvent it cannot pay the hotels nor operate/pay for return flights so the ABTA travel cover that is compulsory for all UK based package travel companies kicks in. They will provide flights home for all the affected customers soon after insolvency at no cost. Now some customers could decide to stay on but would be responsible for any hotel costs and flights home. Remember the hotels will likely be creditors too and won't want customers incurring them costs for which they will not be paid.

Exactly.  It will be a mess for a while.

Gone....

We can be grateful that this is not high season!

The repercussions are massive. Not only are 150,000 British holidaymakers involved but another 450,000 other nationalities through other affiliated companies in other countries.

The British holidaymakers are covered by the tour opetators insurance scheme ATOL who will pay for the accommodation and return travel and even compensate those that have booked holidays. In general those who are here in DR will complete their vacation and be flown home on or about the day intended ny chartered aircraft arranged by the Uk's CAA. The UK Ambassador here is in contact with holidaymakers, hotels and the tourist body.

This is not the case with other nationalities who presumably fall under other insurance schemes.

Condor is one of the affiliates.

Thomas Cook also had significant arrangements with some major hotel chains.

It will take time to work itself through.

Unfortunately the Thomas Cook employees based in DR will be without a job today and may have to fend for themselbes now including repatriation.

That is sad!
