I very much recomment checking yelp.com for local recommendations. On yelp you can check near your own address for places that are rated highly, and the reviews should give you a good idea of the feel of the place.
It helped me find my way around the city!

I love many places, but I recommend Rush street (Rush & State), Boystown (for clubs & Bars), Wicker Park for the restaurants (japanese, itlian, vegan etc... there are everything you want), Michigan Avenue for the shopping, Navy Pier for the view, oh well Chicago has so many good places to go to if I start I'll never finish !!!!
