Hi traveling to Nairobi on an African Safari- Is it safe to be with 2 women Wife and 6 yr old daughter...

Since the 1st time visiting a little apprehensive..
Since we will be outside with just a stranger..

Pls advise

Yes it is safe to be in Nairobi.  You only need to avoid going to specific areas like downtown city centre and also avoid being out late in unfamiliar areas.

Nairobi is a good place to be. Karibu Kenya!

I notice that you are actually going on safari to various parks.

have you looked on the Tripadvisor Kenya Forum, as this is for more visitor orientated than this site.

Lots of tourists come to enjoy Kenya, including women and children and leave having had a great and incident free time here.  I take it that you have arranged for a tour company to take you around, in which case you will not be taken anywhere that is unsafe.   A few basic things to follow like don't leave valuables in your room when on safari (to avoid petty theft).

In Nairobi, its OK to walk around the CBD in daylight, but avoid obviously carrying a lot of valuables, don't give money to beggars/street children and keep to busy streets.  After dark, get a taxi to and from anywhere you want to go, such as restaurants.

Hotel premises are generally secure, both in Nairobi and elsewhere.

Thanks Longonot62 and Nandei for that detailed Peice of advice!

Yes will be joining a tour company but it will just be the 3 of us and the tour guide and the fact that we will be moving around for 7 days with absolute stranger was what made me a little apprehensive!

However I take it that's Tourism is a major industry in Nairobi and thats perhaps the best and only way to explore!

Bear in mind that most visitors to Kenya will move around with a complete stranger, but your guide/driver is likely to have been driving visitors around for some time, possibly years.

Just be sensible and don't bring lots of valuables and don't leave stuff in the vehicle, or your room!

Hi Ganpat,

I was there in Nairobi for around 2 years and gone for safaris with family. Most of the well known tour providers employ drivers and guides after reference and criminal checks. People in Kenya are really nice. Its only a minority thugs who spoil the name. Nairobi is a good place. There are places like Easleigh that you should avoid. When you go out in Nairobi town, don't keep all your cash in your valet. In my two years stay, I never had to face a robbery or pick pocketing. Unfortunately if it happens, just give your valuables and escape. So, it is advisable to keep the minimal valuables with you always. Always use vehicle if you roam around after 7 pm. The weather in Nairobi is very cold during the night. Keep necessary woollen dresses with you, especially for your daughter. Masai Mara reserve is a world wonder, which you should not miss. Keep your tensions away and enjoy the trip.

Regards

Rajeev
