My girlfriend (French) and I (South African) plan to get married soon after which we may live in France. As a South African passport holder, I would when in France, have to apply for residency, however, once I have that may I then legally work in France or must I then apply for a work permit?

The most important thing to do after you get married, is to get the marriage registered in France. You need to do that, so that you can get a livret de famille, which will allow you to get a visa based on the fact that you are married to a French citizen.

I found the following pdf on the French consulate's site, which gives you more details as to what you'd need as the spouse of a French citizen:

As the spouse of a French citizen, you would not have to apply for a separate work permit - the right is automatically granted. Keep in mind, however, that unless you already have a high level of French under your belt, a job (other than something like babysitting), is going to be hard to get.

Good luck!
