"Mall-crawling" - my term for wandering a mall with no specific purpose in mind. Just checking out the spaces - not necessarily shopping...

Looking for some input, please.

I know that Jeddah has several malls.  While in Doha times weren't restricted when single (or unaccompanied) males could visit the malls.

Since my family won't be arriving until the summer what do I need to know or be aware of when mall-crawling?  I don't want to show up and be the out-of-touch expat - "that" expat...

Do all shopping areas have "ladies only" days or times?

Thx,
Rigger

No malls have "ladies only" days or times, at least not in Jeddah.  Some malls, however, have "families only" days (weekends), which is Saudi-speak for "families and single women".  That means certain malls allow entry to families and females only starting about 4 pm Thursday till Saturday evening.  But even then, if you are able to go inside, you will see many feral gangs of young boys inside, dressed in below the bum jeans, Afros, bandannas, and heavy chains (no really, some young Saudi boys dress like that).  How do they get in?  There are various ways, but the commonest method is asking an entering female to escort you in and then give her SR. 50.  In fact, some girls do that as a business, there was even an article in Arab News on this.  Being a white-skinned westerner, they won't stop you, because they know you are not going in to flirt with the girls and throw your phone number written on small pieces of paper at them... or are you?

Even I have gotten in several times by telling the guards I am going in for grocery shopping (which is true), and they can see I am not the type to go in and chase after Saudi girls.  So, no worries for you.

WOW. I just learned about that 50 SR issue. Thank you for that info.

I agree with TRapezius on that being white- skinned. They can get in easily. Anyway, you can stroll in the mall if you have female friends or cousins. That's how I noticed guys here.

Usually they stop local guys and give a soft hand to expatriates, unless they from their attitude and behaviors they look like time enjoyer.
