Whether to buy already renovated or need to be renovated property?

I would like to know you guys opinion or experiences on this, and whether its difficult to renovate either by hiring a builder by yourself or through the Estate Agent?

Many people here renovate using local labour or that supplied by an agent. However my own opinion with over 40 yrs experience in the construction industry, is that building standards here are not on a par with say the UK and good labour is often difficult to find. Though there are a few ex pat builders looking for work. So unless you know what your doing, my view is already renovated properties are the best bet for the novice. Of course there is the 3rd option as I did and bought a new build property built in traditional style.
