Hi all! Does anybody know if there are any issues about bringing a notebook & other electronics? Customs maybe? I just don´t want to have any surprise.

Thanx in advance.

Laptops & most other gadgets - no issues. Just make sure that it can run on 220V. You may also want to bring a stabilizer or UPS to protect it during the (irregular) brownouts.

SLR cameras, especially if you bring a load of lenses can be a problem, despite the fact that you can buy the same equipment in Tripoli. A friend of mine had all of his equipment confistcated when coming through the airport a few months ago. He was given an official receipt and with some help from the company GR department was able to collect it some 2 months later.

Thanx Sandman, I also have a SLR camera, but with 1 lens, bottom of the line Canon 1000D, I hope it´s not a problem. I might also bring a MIDI controller to record my DJ sets on my free time. I guess I´ll have to take the chance!

Thanx.

It's the big telephoto lenses they don't like...my mate's a twitcher but the Libyo's were convinced he wanted to snap their MiG's ;)

Hi Sandman, do you think that with a surge protector would be enough? Like the ones from Belkin? I really don´t want my notebook to melt... I´ve read that this protectors need to be plugged to a grounded outlet, and I´m almost sure that this is not common in Libya, am I right?

Thanx in advance!!

The quality of the city power seems to depend a lot on what part of town you are.

Where we stay in Janzour the supply is constant 220v, but just a couple of streets away it fluctuates quite a lot. To ensure maximum protection of your electronics, get a UPS (which also serves as a stabilizer). Something like an APC-650 will give 20-30 mins of power for a laptop. Some of the computer stores around Dahra sell UPS' but all I've seen there are Chinese made kit.
