Cell Phone purchase

I am about to move from USA to the area of Tavira and believe I will finally need to own a cell phone. Could cognoscenti in these matters advise me about the advisability of making the purchase in the US versus Europe, esp. Portugal.

there are plenty of shops selling mobile phones. You can either have a contract or pay as you go. TMN, Vodaphone etc

Get a GSM 4 band for use with a SIM card, unblocked. If you have been a customer in the States of a company for over a year, they are obliged to release the unblock code to you. I did this last year. AT&T was not happy about it but they did it. I use prepaid, of which there are a multitude of different and confusing possibilities. Mine is a TMN 20 Euros per 2 months required minute purchase. For out of country calls, use Skype and do get a subscription and possibly a number as well.
