Hi all,

We invite all the ones who got married in Australia or who are about to get married in Australia to participate in this thread :)

What are the formalities to get married in Australia? Is it the same for a couple of foreigners of for a mixed couple (between a foreigner and a native of Australia)?

Are the procedures complicated?

How long does it take to carry out all the formalities?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Armand

Hi there,
I am South African, and I married a man that was born in NZ, but had been living here for 15years. You have to wait 30 days after booking your wedding date, and applying for the licence. Once we got married, we found out that as a Kiwi, he could not sponsor me as his partner (!) so we did the whole Perm Res thing for him first and thereafter he became a citizen.
I received a letter from DIAC after our second wedding anniversary and had to provide heaps of evidence AGAIN,.., like proof of our joint ownership of our home etc, photos, affidavits from friends and family, to prove we were legit.(Apparently a joint $400k mortgage is not proof enough of our commitment)))) Anyhoo,.. all good.. and well worth the journey..

Thanks for your contribution Jenergy!;)
