Can one extend their tourist visa (ie, from 30 to 60 days)?

Most sites about extensions refer to extending past 180 days, but I'm concerned about if I can extend beyond what an immigration officer might give me - ex. 30 days according to my proof of accomodations, despite me wanting to stay 2-6 months total. I'm American, btw.

One site says:

"However, it's possible to extend your Forma Migratoria Múltiple to a full 180 days if the immigration official at the Mexico point of entry gave you one for less than the maximum duration of the card (e.g., 60 days instead of 180)."

@acpr it depends where you are. I have heard of some immigration offices doing this, but it's not typical. Usually you'll need to leave the country and return.

Try and live on a vacation visa at your own risk.
