Description
The Embassy of the Republic of Mauritius in Berlin is seeking a qualified, experienced and motivated Consular Officer to join its team. This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of a busy diplomatic mission in Berlin, providing essential consular and administrative services to Mauritian nationals in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Turkiye. We are looking for a bilingual professional who thrives in a legally sensitive environment and takes pride in delivering high-quality consular and administrative support.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
A. Consular Functions
• Processing passport applications and emergency travel documents
• Assistance to Mauritian nationals in distress
• Handling cases of lost or stolen passports
• Processing civil status documentation
• Authentication and legalisation of documents
• Police report coordination
• Processing visa applications and entry clearance documentation
• Work and residence permit documentation
• Prior approval procedures for foreign nationals entering Mauritius
• Coordination of transfer of prisoners and extradition procedures
• Handling transfer of mortal remains or ashes
• Processing renunciation of Mauritian citizenship
B. Registry and Administrative Functions
• Maintaining and updating the Consular Registry
• Filing and managing correspondence
• Drafting correspondence in English and German
• Translation of official documents from German into English
• Liaison with German authorities and relevant institutions
• Providing protocol assistance
• Supporting official visits and delegations
• Any other duties directly related to the above or to the delivery of expected outputs
Skills
Essential: • Bachelor's degree (any discipline) • German proficiency: CEFR C1 minimum (Goethe-Zertifikat C1 / TestDaF / telc or equivalent) — required for translation of legal documents and liaison with German federal authorities (genuine occupational requirement, AGG s.8) • English: fluent, written and spoken • Demonstrated ability to translate official documents from German into English • Strong administrative and organisational skills • Applicants must already possess the legal right to work in Germany Advantageous: • Degree in Translation Studies or Applied Linguistics • Staatlich geprufte/r Ubersetzer/in qualification (advantage) • Knowledge of either French, Polish, Turkish or Czech • Prior experience in a diplomatic mission or public administration
