Where in Uruguay can we settle for a more rural, quieter life?

We are country folk from South Africa. We are currently living in Cape Town but don't like city living. We are seriously thinking of relocating to Uruguay but would want to settle in the country, with wide open spaces, rivers, farming community. Any suggestions?

I am swiss, but living in Salta up in the very north of Argentina. I am also interested to move to Uruguay and searching some nice place in the country (as I am a horse lover). Therefor I was allready 3 times in uruguay this year to find out places and traveled a lot around the country.

As you mentioned you want to be near a city I can tell you the following. In Uruguay the small cities are very, I mean very quiet and lonely. If you are interested to be near a city because of some culture, restaurants and so on, everything is on the coast side, the small rural towns inside the country are not at all cosmopolitan.

Please give me a tip what are your expectations concerning living near a city, so I can help you out with aditional information.

I AM A FRENCH GYU LIVING IN URUGUAY FOR 3 YEARS.
I THINK THERE IS MAINLY TWO AREAS WHICH COULD CORRESPOND WITH WHAT YOUR ARE LOOKING FOR :

THE COLONIA/CARMELO AREA : VERY FERTILE LANDS ALONG THE RIO DE LA PLATA, JUST IN FRONT OF BUENOS AIRES. DISTANCE FROM MONTEVIDEO ABOUT 3 HOURS.

THE RURAL AREA OF PUNTA DEL ESTE ESPECIALLY PUEBLO EDEN AND PUEBLO GARZON. YOU ARE JUST 2 HOURS FRON MONTEVIDEO AND IN PUNTA DEL ESTE YOU WILL FIND ALL YOU NEED. NICE RURAL LANDSCAPES JUST 20 MINUTES FROM NICES BEATCHES.

ANYWAY THE BETTER OPTION IS TO FIRST VISIT THE COUNTRY BEFORE CHOOSING A PLACE TO HAVE A GENERAL VIEW.

Hi,

I am new to this forum. This thread in Uruguay forum looks more interesting to me

I live in New England, USA. Land prices are insane. Especially since COVID and all the city people (NYC) moved to the countryside and ruined everything. Then, the first winter- they deserted it but left their high prices.

The same with Californians in Texas, except they don’t leave. Anyway,

The new administration is coming in January 2025. If I lose my HUD/VAsh housing subsidy then the rent will be undo-able. I will be living in a tent again. The weather and the crime in the US make that very unsafe, especially at my age.

I have been wanting to move to South America for decades.

I was born and lived in Texas. We traveled to Mexico (away from any border) once a month for medication and stuff. We could cross over with a drivers license in 1994. We drove to San Jose del Cabo in 1995, and car camped along the way.

My daughter’s in laws are from Uruguay. They left in the 1970’s and’i0’s when the government was not so stable.

Uruguay looks very stable now.

Is it easier to get a visa/residency in Uruguay than say for example Paraguay?

I am accustomed to living a slow life, a farm life, or a small city life.

I have skills. I will maintain some regular income if the US administration doesn’t cut it.

So I am developing some new skills and a small business.

@PKristinaCampoH They are other areas north of the capital Montevideo with nice little cities, like Paysandu for example, or any other town bordering the rio Uruguay, plus you can cross to Argentina easily and these places are way cheaper than Maldonado and surroundings; like somebody suggested the best is to come first and see what’s best for you.

Buenas Kristina!

I have made a similar move. There are so many very pleasant opportunities in Uruguay that they are impossible to list. I chose Colonia (the department nor the city Colonia del Sacramento). But this area, like all others allong the river are very expensive (I am not on the river as I bought a farm again). The interior is more interesting price wise and it is safe and friendly too.
