After long delays, the new Transvía tram system opened in Cuenca this week for commercial travel in the city. A tram is a trolley car that runs on public streets.

While the system needs 64,000 passengers a day to break even, about 9,200 used the system on day one, Tuesday.

You can read an article in Spanish in Quito's newspaper El Comercio about the new tranvía of Cuenca:

Fares per trip are very reasonable with some restrictions on timely use, starting at $0.30 USD.

There are three fares: According to the article, to get the $0.30 USD fare, you must buy a personal multi-trip card for more than 5 trips and use them all within 15 days.

The second "normal" fare is $0.35 USD per trip, for an electronic card or paper ticket.

The third fare is called the "boleto sencillo" or one-way/single ride ticket, and it costs $1 USD. According to the article it is for tourists - the article does not specify how the distinction is made - perhaps if you do not possess an Ecuadorean cédula, the national ID card which shows you are a citizen or resident, you will be charged this amount.

For all three types of fares, it's half-cost for children, seniors and persons with "capacidades especiales", the handicapped.

There will be inspectors who will ask to see a canceled, valid ticket, for passengers randomly. A $120 USD fine will be levied against violators.
