Thanks for the help.  In your experience, have you spoken to many foreigners who have been brought in?  If yes, which roles are you aware of that are most common.  My experience is limited.

Petrobras has a number of foreign employees, both in their offshore operations and land based exploration, drilling, logistics, etc.

One of the major requirements for working here in Brazil is that you learn to speak Portuguese with a reasonable degree of fluency. So if you aren't doing so already get into a language course, it is indispensible.

I have contacted Petrobas and thought I would share their response for anyone else considering them as a potential employer.  Note that in the paragraph, they state: "One of the prerequisites is that the candidate has a Brazilian or Portuguese nationality"  This quickly eliminates many if not all foreigners from what I can understand...

"In reply to your message, received by Petrobras Customer Service, we kindly inform you that the acceptance of employees in companies of Petrobras in Brazil is subject to the existence of vacancies and the candidates required standard achievement in the examination.  When a public selection process occurs, it is published in local or national newspapers, according to the recruitment scope. Therefore, Petrobras does not keep curriculum files of any candidate in order to be part of its staff.

The selection process announcements are published in the Official Gazette (DOU  Diário Oficial da União). For further information about the edicts, we suggest that you visit . It is necessary to have installed Acrobat Reader in your computer.

Foreign nationality

One of the prerequisites is that the candidate has a Brazilian or Portuguese nationality. In case of Portuguese one, the candidate has to be sustained by the Statute of Equality, between Brazilians and Portuguese, recognizing the enjoyment of political rights, under the Article 12, 1st paragraph of the Brazilian Federal Constitution and the Decree 70436/72.

Yes, kind of forgot that Petrobras being a State owned company would probably be required to hire only Brazilian citizens. Sorry about that slip up!

There are, however, numerous multi-national petroleum companies and oil industry related businesses here in Macaé that would not be subject to the same "citizens only" rules.

Hello Sean,

It is difficult enough, because of the laws here that require employers to prove that they've exhausted every avenue of placing a qualified Brazilian in a vacancy before hiring a foreigner to fill it. Hoping that you'd be able to obtain work in such a highly specialized field as the petroleum industry without previous experience or specialized training is really expecting quite a lot.

I would suggest that if you are thinking about getting into this field that you consider enrolling in one of the technical courses that are being offered by some of the private technical schools, then at least you'd stand some chance.

Also a reasonable level of fluency in Portuguese would be absolutely essential. Without speaking the language reasonably well your chances would be almost zero.

While this is absolutely correct in order to be employed directly by Petrobras, it does not take into consideration that a very large number of those who work at Petrobras are not Petrobras employees, but rather contracted employees of other companies in the petroleum industry, suppliers, support industries who ARE NOT bound by the same nationality requirements as the State owned company that Petrobras is. These companies hire foreign nationals all the time, based solely on their expertise and experience in the industry. So while you may not get in the front door, you get in the back door as employees of multinational companies such as Halliburton, Diamond Offshore, Transocean and the various others located here.

Easy Peasy...

If expat contacts under contract is what you seek then comb  for your local regional office for companies like Schlumberger, Johhnson Controls, Sperry Vickers, Reftek, Atlas Copco. and so many others.  Chances are you will get a lot of local contacts doing contract work for Petrobras.

Most of Petrobras' rank and file direct hires used to be combed through public servant exams ( concursos ), hence they are mostly Brazilians. 

Then you have the brass, mostly hired as appointees.   

And then you have your specialists ( instrumentation, rig engineers ), mostly hired through third party contracting companies. 

People who work on platforms would probably be hired as temp contractors.   

Outside foreign oil companies working on concessions ( Chevron, Mobil ), Petrobras has regional offices in ...
