Why did Brazil purchase 36 Swedish fighter planes

James

If opposing opinions can be shared without becoming personal attacks or heated disputes, I too don't see much of a problem. That said, we must all remember that the owner and moderators frown on political topics. They almost always end up getting locked sooner or later.

I myself have posted several that have pushed the limits, and also had several locked and even removed completely. Even I'm not immune from moderation standards. Just remember that some of the topics on this forum have probably been given a bit more leeway than on other forums, because of the friendship that exists between Julien and I. Let's not go too far with the political statements and jabs because moderators won't cut us too much slack. If we all cool it down just a few notches, this topic thread might be around for a while. Just remember - I'm not the guy that holds the kill switch.  ;)

Cheers,
James

I just bought a new car here in Brasil, it was expensive. The 2001 Toyota I was driving was a good car and fine for getting around here in the Regiao do Lagoas. But since owning the Toyota which I bought cheap I have had to replace the water pump, buy new tires and clutch.
My In-Laws live in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, they are getting old, my mother in law recently spent time in the hospital.
The purchase of this car has not come at a very good time. We just moved to a new house in Cabo Frio and its Christmas season. But I had the money in savings and I needed a reliable vehicle for the 520 Km round trips to/from Cabo Frio and Rio. So I bought a new car that should last for years to come.
The core of the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) consists of obsolete US F- fighters made in the 1970's (50-60 aircraft) the 12 French Mirage-2000 fighters made in the 1980's were retired in 2013.

In regards to why did Brasil purchase the Saab Gripen NG to replace its 40 year old F-5's.
Does anyone have any options on what could have been done ?
Should they have continued operating with the F-5's purchased from the US in the 1970's ?
Should Brasil have purchased a different aircraft type from a different manufacturer ?
If your response is an opinion please preface it as such, but I really would like to read some facts with substance.

I was born and raised down in Alabama
On a farm way back up in the woods
I was so raggedy, folks used call me, "Patches"
Papa used to tease me 'bout it
Of course deep down inside he was hurt
'Cause he'd done all he could

My papa was a great ol' man
I can see him with a shovel in his hand
See, education he never had
But he did wonders when the time got bad
The little money from the crops he raised
Barely paid the bills we made

Oh, life it kicked him down to the ground
When he tried to get up, life would kick him back down
One day papa called me to his dyin' bed
Put his hands on my shoulders and in tears he said

He said, "Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you"

Two days later papa passed away
And I became a man that day
So I told mama I was gonna quit school
But she said that was daddy's strictest rule

So every morning 'fore I went to school
I fed the chickens and I chopped wood too

Sometimes I felt that I couldn't go on
I wanted to leave, just run away from home
But I would remember what my daddy said
With tears in his eyes on his dyin' bed

He said, "Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
I tried to do my best
It's up to you to do the rest"

But then one day a strong rain came
And washed all the crops away
And at the age of 13
I thought I was carryin' the weight of the whole world on my shoulders
And you know mama knew what I was going through

'Cause every day I had to work the fields
'Cause that's the only way we got our meals
You see, I was the oldest of the family
And everybody else depended on me
Every night I heard my mama pray
Lord, give him strength to face another day

4 years have passed and all the kids have grown
The angels took mama to a brand new home
God knows people, I she'd tears
But my daddy's voice kept me through the years

Sayin', "Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you"

I can still hear papa when he said, "Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
I tried to do my best
It's up to you to do the rest"

I can still hear papa when he said, "Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you"

See I got stories too!

Well here's another analogy from down Alabama way. " Never wrestle with a pig, you both get muddy and the pig, well he likes it."
