Defamation -- whether libel or slander -- is treated as a "crime contra honra" in Brazilian Law.  There are conceptual parallels with the United States and other Common Law jurisdictions, but there are also many differences, both substantive and procedural.


People who believe that they've been defamed seriously enough to upset their lives should discuss the situation with a lawyer before entering this potential minefield.
