Hiring Full-time Stay-in Helper / Nanny

Hi all,

I am a Singaporean who is planning to relocate with my family to New York City. We prefer to reside in the Upper Eastern New York City

I am expecting and will be due to deliver end February 2024.

As we are new expats to New York City, I really need your advice in where I could hire reliable and experienced confinement nanny to take care of post delivery mother in terms of preparing their meals and helping with taking care of newborn.

Also if I need to hire a full time stay in helper Chinese/Taiwanese or Philippine nationality, do you have any recommendations? Is it better to hire them directly from their native country and come in with a work permit or hire via local agency ?

I have a toddler of 2.5 years old and would also like to hear from your recommendations on which preschool to send her. Prefer her to learn English and Mandarin or even French / Japanese as long it’s an excellent school.

In NYC, you will not have a problem finding applicants. Do keep in mind that you cannot discriminate based on nationality or country of origin. I'm sure you wouldn't like to be denied opportunities because you come from Singapore!

Hi Romaniac, thanks for your reply. I am in no intention of discriminating when choosing nationality of domestic helper.

However, as my mum and mum in law will be coming over to stay, they can only communicate with mandarin. We just want to minimise any communication barrier for them and I would love my kids to pick up the mandarin when they spend time with the helper.

Also, with cultural differences, it’s more demanding to ask helpers with other nationalities to prepare asian dishes (3 meals a day) that meet our demands. They might be good in preparing other cuisines. And this will certainly not ease our load if the helper cannot even adapt in cooking dishes.

If I couldn’t find a suitable one in NYC, I will apply a permit and bring our current helper along.
