Banks and non-citizen

willemsc66

Hi, We are a Belgian cohabiting couple, so not married.

Europe wants to put a financial tie on us so we are looking to secure our money.

Hence these questions:

1. Can you open an account in the USA without having a residence there for the time being?

2. If you have an account in usa as a non resident , does usa pass on info to Europe?

May 2026 we do go on a tour to the West Coast of America.

Thank you for showing us the way.

Chantal

@willemsc66 Yes, you can open a U.S. bank account without living there, but it is much easier to do so in person rather than online.

While most major U.S. banks require a local physical address for their standard online applications, many will allow non-residents to open accounts if they visit a branch physically.

Since you will be on the West Coast in May 2026, you can visit branches of major banks like Bank of America, Chase, or Wells Fargo.
