No, not really.  What is the difference?

I have been doing a thorough research. Long story short: like the rest of the world, there are 2 main types.

1- The originals: Available only from Dr. Dre's authorized Monstor stores. Check out the warnings on their official sites here: http://beatsbydre.com/

2- The rest are all replicas.
Worse: The replicas come in three quality classes A,B & C.

The leading electronic resellers in KSA sell Replica class B on very high margin.

I was looking for someone who could have got a chance to compare KSA purchased class B (actually replicas) with the originals.

So far, I could have confirmed this infrmation through a few authentic looking resources inside and outside KSA.

My conclusion at this point is: The best way is to buy directly from Dr. Dre site or from their authorized resellers listed on the site. Amazon is one of them.

The research goes on and I'll keep on updating this thread if I come across any useful info.

Thanks for sharing.  To your point, even the mobile sets comes into the market are replicas with A B and C standards.  You can get B & C even at super stores without naming any.  Where as A is sold at most of the stores as ORIGINAL.  It is very difficult to differentiate the genuine from the replica.  Pity on us, what more can I say?   This is the reason for the enormous variation in the pricing.

The requirement for the awareness is really getting more and more important. We intend buying something costing an arm and a leg and end up getting a duplicate? Pity!!!

I came across an interesting link on dr dre website. You can actually verify your headset before buying.

Looking no further, this is the best they could do; I'm sure this must work because you have to specify the retailer name and country name.

Thats cool.  by the way, I have a barcode scanner on my mobile but it seldom takes me to the right site to authenticate.  Any ideas?

I guess you mean you scan barcodes and after the fon searches for them online, you get a different product...right?

It is basically because worldwide the international standards are not usually that much followed. I've been in retail industry, that's how I know:

There are 2 major sort of barcodes:

1- UPC (Universal Product Codes) - It's issued by an international agency in US (of course for some payment charged). Scan it and you'll get the right product name. For example, try scanning the Smile Tissues box.

2. ALU (Alternate Lookup Unit) - locally issued. Nothing to do with internationalism and so no link to any search engines.

thanks for that.  That was good piece of info to know about bar coding.  Till this moment, I use to imagine that I am getting some grade 2 product or whatever.

do they sound any better than Bose over the ear hedphones?

I've been going through many user reviews on sites like CNET etc. They are damn good competitors. However, I've got a feeling that Dr. Dre has lagged Bose behind with their sound & product quality.

OMG. Thank you for this info. I was really contemplating buying a set of Studio Beats. I guess I'll have to do my research first before buying it from the retailer... since... you know... I still don't have my own credit card and therefore can't purchase stuff online.

I'll give this thing a try after a couple of days:

I like SHASS computers; and my plan is to punch in the serial number of the headset in my cell phone and verify it with Dr.Dre repository before I conclude the purchase decision.

If anything goes fishy, I'll order online.

I said above that I'll keep you posted. Here is an important update. I visited 2 Jarir Book Store showrooms and took 3 random samples each of the serial numbers of the limited edition studio On-Ears. Then tried to  verify on http://beatsbydre.com/verify/verifyserial.aspx

All 6 came the same as below.

So they ARE selling originals. Anyways anyone must verify before buying to be on the safe side.

I've my heart set on newly relelased Wireless (BlueTooth) model which isn't available in KSA yet.

For example, multi-color studio is $300, Jarir selling for 1,500 SAR ($400).

Hmm.. But I am not a big fan of the dres.. I mean they are good. no doubt.. but a tad bit expensive for what you get. Well thats my personal opinion. I have the grado SR 80, and when compared to the the beats.. well i felt both are almost the same sound quality.
but in ear, the sennheiser IE7 and IE8,(i have the IE7). both are fantastic, a bit more expensive and still cheaper than the beats ones are bose, which totally rock as well...

But it comes down to personal choice.
