Foreigners ID card - National Identity Card

Hi everyone

I have been given a Non Lucrative Visa to live in Spain for 12 months. I have arrived in Spain yesterday expecting to walk into the nearest Police Station to get a Foreigners ID card (as per the instructions from the Spanish Embassy in New Zealand). However, i have been to two police stations so far - Roses and Figueres and have now been told i need to go to Girona. Does anyone know the process to get an ID card once you have a NLV please? All information welcome as i have been told that that i need this to rent an apartment and there is one that i would like to sign a contract for. - thanks Margaret

Congrats on your NLV, and the start of your new life in Spain. But, yeah, it definitely doesn't work like that. :-)

There's an online appointment (Cita Previa) system where you book for a particular process (in your case, the TIE, or la Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) at your local office.

You'll need 2 appointments, I think, the first is to apply for your TIE and give your fingerprints/pic, and the 2nd to collect your card. (The first - from memory -says something like Toma de Huellas.)

You need to check the exact requirements, as you have to pay in advance (at a local bank), and probably get your Padron certificate (based on your property ownership deed or a long term rental contract). Maybe health insurance, application form, photos, it's all listed in the requirments when you make the booking.

I think you have a month from entering Spain to do this, so it's good you got on with it already. Good luck!
