Spain Digital Nomad Visa

Hello, I will be traveling to Spain with a schengen visa and I want to apply for the digital nomad visa.

I meet all the requirements but the only thing I'm concerned about is the accommodation, since I don't want to rent a place for a full year and I prefer living in hostels and traveling around, I wanted to check is there a solution to avoid the accommodation requirement?

If not, I will be asking a friend of mine to declare that I will be staying with them, in this case then I need to apply from the province that my friend is living in?

Thank you for your time.

Many visas do have a Proof of Address requirement, which is usually satisfied with a long-term rental contract. If you have a friend who owns a property, and is happy to provide you with accommodation, then I expect that some kind of letter from them confirming your stay would be acceptable.

However, I don't think the DNV has this requirement. It's certainly not mentioned in the following links. Perhaps you can point me at your page that says it IS needed?

Like other visas, you DO need to provide of Proof of Health Insurance. You can find a bunch of local providers (and cost) via a comparison site such as Rastreator or Acierto. We used ASISA who are good, and among the cheaper options. If you're in Spain to apply for your DNV, then the easiest option is to pop into a nearby insurance broker.

You should also check on the NIE issue, I don't know if you get one with the DNV, or if you need to apply separately for the NIE. Once you have the DNV, there's also a separate step to get your TIE.

Thank you for your response!

In here it mentions Proof of residence in the consular district is required.

Regarding the insurance I am using [link moderated]/ and I have used it for two other visas before so I am hoping i can provide this for the DNV, do you have any information if this is good enough?

From my recollection, the NIE isn't a prerequisite for the DNV, and isn't accommodated by the DNV process (IIRC you will need to request it separately).  It is important to have if you wish to carry out economic activities in Spain, so I would highly suggest sorting that out in parallel as these can take a while to receive.

@Poorya

That proof is not your Spanish address proof. It's a proof that you reside locally and can apply at a particular Spanish consulate.

Your insurance link was moderated. The insurance required has some fairly strict properties, but doesn't necessarily have to be issued in Spain. But for most applications it is.

From my recollection, it must be a proper private health insurance (not holiday / travel insurance), have zero deductible/copago, and have sufficient cover (60k euros). If it's not issued in Spain you probably need a certified translation of the policy/certificate.

Hi,

This is a very common question for digital nomad visa applications.

In practice, Spain does not require you to rent a property for a full year before applying. However, you do need to demonstrate where you will be staying, at least initially.

Hostels or constant short-term stays can be problematic, because the administration usually expects some form of stable accommodation or address, especially for the application process and registration afterwards.

Using a friend’s address can be a valid option, but it needs to be properly documented (for example, a signed declaration and proof of their residence). Keep in mind that this is not just a formality — it has to be consistent with the rest of your application.

Regarding your question about the province:

If you apply from within Spain, the application is generally handled centrally, but your address in Spain still matters for practical steps after approval (such as registration).

In many cases, the accommodation part is less about the specific place and more about showing coherence and credibility in your overall situation.

If you're planning to move around Spain, it's still possible — but it's important to structure things correctly from the beginning to avoid delays or complications later on.

Hope this helps.

I have been approved for Spanish residency but do not plan on moving for a while. Can I wait until I actually move to apply for my tie?  Also can I work with resident status?

Hi!

This depends a bit on the type of residency you’ve been granted, but there are a couple of important points to keep in mind.

If your residence has already been approved, there are usually time limits to enter Spain and complete the next steps, including applying for your TIE (residence card). Waiting too long can create complications or even affect the validity of your permit.

The TIE is not something you apply for “whenever you move” — it’s part of the process once your residence is granted, and timing matters.

Regarding work:

it depends entirely on the type of residence you have. Some permits allow you to work (either as an employee or self-employed), while others do not.

In practice, what often causes issues is not the approval itself, but how the timing and next steps are handled after that.

If you’re not planning to move immediately, it’s worth making sure your situation is still aligned with the conditions of your permit.

Hope this helps.
