Would like to know about expatriating to Spain

vbuntingrice

@Julien

I am brand new to the forum and would like to know about expatriating to Spain.Approximately 10 12 years my husband and I were ready to move to Ecuador but grandkids moving next door became a priority.  We live in US(Arizona) and not fluent but  can deal with the Spanish laguage pretty well. We are familiar with ;atin culture and for some reason, Spain intrigues us.

Please give any guidelines as to locations, cost of living, sources etc and and anything else deemed relevant so we may pan an exploratory trip.

We are not young (70s) but are healthy ,active and fit.

Realize this is asking a lot but am very appreciative of any help or advice.

Muchas gracias.amigos nuevos.

Spain's a lovely country and a popular retirement destination.

For retirees, the most popular residence option is the NLV, No Lucrativa Visa. There is lots of info available on how to apply for this (at a Spanish consulate near you).

There are thousands of miles of beautiful coastline (the famous Costas) and many great places to choose from. I'd suggest you start by visiting some of the most popular choices such as Marbella/Malaga (Costa del Sol), Alicane/Valencia (Costa Blanca), Tarragona/Barcelona/Girona (Costa Dorada/Costa Brava).

We live in Alicante's neighbour Elche, which is UNESCO-listed for its palm groves, and is a more traditional Spanish city... but only 20 minutes from lovely beaches. We fly very conveniently from Alicante-Elche airport which is also about 20 minutes away.

Here's a nice article on the Costas, there are many to choose from!

I didn't live in Ecuador, but I spent many years in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Panama). Some are cheap (e.g. Argentina, right now, if you have USD) and perhaps easier to fly back and forth from USA. And, undoubtedly, there are some beautiful locations in these countries. But I just found them overly aggravating with too much crime and poverty, and an overly common get-the-gringo attitude. I'm WAY happier back in the EU, I find it very relaxing and civilized in comparison.
