What do you think about work relocation packages to Portugal

When I look out the window in Ireland and everything feels grey and bleak,

I sometimes drift into searching for jobs in Mediterranean countries.

I’ve noticed that some Portuguese job agencies are targeting “junior expats” and offering relocation packages.

What’s your take on these kinds of offers?

And did you move to Portugal because of something similar, or do you know anyone who has?

Those ads you see for "junior expats" in Portugal are, for the most part, for BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies—essentially, large contact centre hubs (call centres).


Many young people use these offers with everything paid for, stay for 6 months or a year to get to know the country and culture, and then look for something better in their actual field of study once they have their documents and are settled.


The pay is modest. Usually, around €1,100 to €1,700 gross (plus a food allowance). If accommodation isn't included, this amount is very tight for living comfortably in Lisbon. The call centre environment can be very rigid, with tight performance metrics and repetitive tasks.

Many of these agencies offer a room in a shared apartment with other colleagues. In a rental market as tough as Lisbon or Porto, this is a huge benefit. People will be working and living with others in the exact same situation, which makes building an immediate social circle very easy, with people from a wide range of countries. They make many parties and social events, so this won't be a problem...
