Exploratory train and bus travel for future move

MateoT7

I will be visiting Portugal in January to figure out where I might want to live. I've connected with some people near Coimbra, and in Ponte de Lima but would like to get in contact with some expats in the Southern parts of Portugal (Lisbon and the Southern coast). I arrive in Lisbon on January 16th, and immediately go to Coimbra to the Airbnb.

So . . .

My questions:

  1. What is the best way to travel by train? There is an app, should I use that? Any good websites with the information on schedules, routes, etc.?
  2. Same as #1 but for buses.

Please post your answers on the forum, I'm sure others have had the same questions.

Please message me directly if you'd like to connect, especially if you're in the Southern parts. I'm very much looking forward to my visit.

At Lisbon airport, take the underground at Aeroporto station to Oriente station (red line).  There you can take the train or a bus to Coimbra.

1. Traveling by Train (CP - Comboios de Portugal)

Lisbon-Coimbra-Porto corridor.

you should use the CP - Comboios de Portugal app. It is the most reliable way to buy tickets, see real-time schedules, and check platform numbers.

The Website: cp.pt is the official site. It has an English version

Pro-Tips for Your Trip:

Book in Advance: For the Alfa Pendular (high-speed) or Intercidades (intercity) trains, you can get "Promo" tickets if you book 5–8 days in advance.

Arrival in Coimbra: Long-distance trains stop at Coimbra-B. From there, your ticket usually includes a free 5-minute shuttle train to Coimbra-A (the central station in the heart of the city).

2. Traveling by Bus

Rede Expressos: This is the main national network. You can use their app/website (rede-expressos.pt). Main Hubs in Lisbon: Most long-distance buses depart from the Sete Rios terminal (Blue Metro line) or Oriente (Red Metro line).

FlixBus: They have a massive presence in Portugal now and are often probably  the cheapest option for the Lisbon-Coimbra route. Available only at Oriente terminal.
