Selling Silver in Portugal

TGCampo

I would like to find out where in the wider Lisbon area I can sell silver items (e.g. unwanted silver cutlery) at the current silver price.

You'll get a bad deal - Probably scrap value if you try to sell to dealers

@Tom,

Some shops here. If you look up the address on Google Earth, you can see the shop from the street:

Many thanks. I will try these. I don't expect anybody to be interested in the items themselves, but only the silver that can be recovered from them.

I tried to contact the above listed companies by email (in Portuguese and English) and didn't receive a reply. This reminds me of the guy who hoped to get an answer to his email to AIMA. Portugal is proud to organize the Web Summit, but when it comes to communication with smaller (?) companies, email doesn't work. 😂

JohnnyPT

AIMA doesn't reply to emails because the Asians send thousands of emails a day and monopolise the phone with thousands of calls a day, where each person has 3 or 4 phones calling at the same time all day (!). This subject has already been covered in TV reports.

When it comes to selling gold, they usually need to analyse the pieces in person. If you're interested, you have to go there...

I found these shops in Caldas da Rainha, I don't know if they still exist (in Google Earth they can be found).

@JohnnyPT

Yes JohnnyPT, I am aware that I would have to go there. However, as I intend selling Silver, and not Gold (which even a stand in the local shopping center wants to buy). So I would have liked to know in advance whether they buy at all and on what basis (e.g. EUR per kg pure silver according to London exchange minus a fee). Looks like I am just used to a different market place. Thanks a lot for your assistance. Much appreciated!

I would recommend that AIMA automates their system such that a message is sent to clients informing them on the status of their request without the need to call them. If people knew where they are in the queue they might not feel "in the dark". Fortunately that isn't my problem.

Just an ides but when I had to dispose of stuff from a deceased estate, silver things, ivory (oh No!) things, old paintings etc. I found an auction would take them with a reserve. Not sure where they exist in Portugal but if you search for  Ewbankauctions in UK that sort of place.

I have come to the conclusion that selling silver and silver plated cutlery isn't worth the effort in Portugal. While German companies daily and online provide their buying prices for a large number of different items and silver qualities, Portuguese businesses provide nothing. When going there with a few items (just as a test) they offer prices that are 50% below what is offered in Germany and they only want to buy selected items with a high silver content. Plus - as usual - cash buying is preferred.

Again, my conclusion is: Just don't do it in Portugal. It is cheaper shipping to a country that is more professional (there might be a number of countries, but I only tried Germany).

Has anybody tried this for gold items? Is it as bad? The Swiss company buying mainly gold in Shopping Centers is at least very professional. However, their prices are very low as well.
