I am 2, maybe 3, years from emigrating to Portugal

David_NOVA

Hello all,

As the title states I am at most 3 years from making the move from DC to Portugal as a retiree.

The question I have is there anything I can do this far out to prepare and lay the ground work for a successful move? Are there things you wished you knew that far out?

Thank you very much for your answers.

Hi David, Welcome.

I think that during this period you should take the opportunity to visit the country and start choosing a place to live, as you will have to have a lease or buy a house, since one of the requirements is accommodation, in order to be granted a residence permit.

As for the rest, I think a year is enough to organise the documentation.

Hi David,

Beyond what JohnnyPT has said, you may want to consider getting a NIF and opening a bank account.

I would also suggest keeping track generally how long visa applications are taking so you know when to start your process.

Oh, I didn't know I could apply for an NIF before moving there. I will definitely get on that. Thank you.

I have a plan to visit again within the next year. Thank you for the information.
