Is it enough temporary NIF until SEF appointment?

Hello everyone,

I have applied for D7 visa for Portugal and I am waiting for results. I need information on some issues. I would appreciate it if you can help.

-Is a permanent NIF number needed when creating a SEF appointment? Or is it sufficient to have the permanent NIF number at the time of the SEF appointment?

-If it is sufficient to have a permanent NIF number during the SEF appointment; Does it make sense to temporarily create the NIF number when opening a bank account for free and then make it permanent until the SEF appointment date during the waiting period?

Hi Kocali, Welcome.

NIF to be submitted must always be the permanent one.

The temporary NIF is a concept that banks "invented" to facilitate clients, especially expats, to open a bank account, without having the definitive NIF issued by the Portuguese tax authority. This temporary NIF is useless, it only serves provisionally for the bank, and while it is not replaced by the permanent one.
