Maltese Citizenship by Descent – Advice Welcome

RustyRichy

Hello everyone,

My wife, Courtney, was born in South Africa, but her maternal grandmother was born in Malta in 1943. Through her grandmother, Courtney qualifies for Maltese citizenship by descent. For our family, this is a meaningful opportunity — not just for paperwork, but to connect our three children to their heritage and give them future opportunities in Europe.

We are currently preparing all the required documents, including birth, marriage, and death certificates, legal affidavits, translations, and passports. As first-timers, the process is quite overwhelming!

If anyone here has gone through Maltese citizenship by descent, we’d love to hear your advice:

How long did your application take?

Any tips for getting documents quickly?

Recommendations for accredited service providers?

Even just sharing advice or pointing us to resources would mean the world. Thank you so much for your help and for sharing your experiences — we’re really looking forward to learning from this community.

Warm regards,

Have you searched Facebook for South Africian residents in Malta groups? I know there are a few very helpful groups. The members of the groups may be able to help you better.

On a seperate note, I have received a private message from you via this forum. This message contains two crowdfunding links as you are seeking R32,000 to finance your citizenship application. Unfortunately I am not in a postion to assist, never the less, I wish you the best of luck with your journey.
