Which language to learn and how?

Lauranne

Hey everyone!

As we all know, in Luxembourg it’s pretty standard to speak 4 or 5 languages – personally, I have a good level of English and people always tell me: “It’s great to speak two languages… for a French person!” 😂

Living in this country is a fantastic opportunity to learn new languages! Since it can vary a lot from person to person, I thought it would be nice to share our experiences and tips.

Luxembourgish, German, English… Which language(s) did you choose to learn first? Why did you make that choice?

How are you learning or how did you learn? Do you use apps? Have you taken classes, and if so, where? Or are you mainly progressing by chatting with locals?

As for me, after taking a few Luxembourgish classes, I was strongly advised to focus on German first. I signed up for Babbel and have been learning German for a few months now, but I find it difficult to practice on a daily basis (as Luxembourg City is mostly French-speaking). I’m considering going to language cafés to find people to practice with. Has anyone tried that?

I’ve also heard that the INL (Institut national des Langues) courses are great, but the schedule seems really intense 😅 If anyone has experience with that, I’d love to hear about it!

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and advice,

Lauranne
