Possible move to Gib

Your project is totally feasible however I would recommend that you organise a discovery trip to Gib to assess whether it is a good fit for you and your grand daughter.

Have you ever been to Gibraltar ?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Possibly a good move. As a UK citizen, you can live in Gibraltar without the usual hassle of visas and residence permits; assuming you have a Court's backing, your granddaughter shouldn't be a problem either, but you need to check this carefully.

The only thing I can think of is the special tax status that Gib gives to many retirees will be nullified by the fact that your Forces Pension is taxed at source (so in the UK). My advice would be to speak to HMRC and a financial advisor and see what your options are.

@Bhavna hi yes I have been many times during my time in the Navy although l believe it has change some what since I was last there in the 90s I am stopping off next year on a cruse so will see for my self . Just seems it could be an option to retire to the Sun whilst still carting for my granddaughter.

@Cynic hi thanks for your reply as I am still working I am taxed at 40% on my Navy pension so I would have to research this. my wife and I have a court order to be my granddaughters guardian so that shouldn’t be an issue but I need to ensure she continues her education at an English speaking school so that is why Gib seems an option. To allow us to retire in the sun and still carry out our obligations to our grandaughter. I will keep researching and hopefully can make a dream come true. Thanks Kev

I sympathize, I'm an ex-Serviceman myself and the good news is that your pension is offset against your personal allowance once you retire; mine dropped to almost none at first, then my state pension kicked in, and together with my private workplace pension I accrued once I left the Forces and  started to pay out, I'm almost back where I started.  It may depend on which pension scheme you're on.

A few further thoughts.  Perhaps speak to the Forces Pension Society they will almost certainly have some members in and around Gib; they have a website, and this link will take you to it.  Also, The RBL have a branch in Gib; they have a Facebook page and this link will take you straight to it.  One last thing, I don't know if you ever joined the RAOB, but they have a Lodge in Gib; they also have a website and this link will take you straight to it.

Hi Kevin,

I think one of the biggest problems in gib is the cost of a two bedroom place. Living in Gibralter properties are extremely  small and rents are extremely high. Just for a studio apartment cost £1000 a month two bedrooms is easily around £2000 a month. On the plus side, if your daughter does attend Gibralter schools and is a resident there for five years and he’s created she will receive a uni education in the UK for free including accommodation costs and often includes flights and travels back and forth to Gibralter from the UK in the uni holidays. It is a great place to live. People are very friendly and you can regularly travel across to Spain and enjoy what Spain has to offer., great features and great food. But I would certainly look at the cost of rental properties and see if it still remains an option. Good luck don’t give up on the dream.

thanks for your reply I have looked and seen that the price of Property is high I should be able to rent my House in the UK for £2000 PM so this would off set against a place in Gib. I will keep research and see if we can make the move.

It is possible to get a 2 bedroom apartment for €1225 I have just seen in Gib so there are properties available.
