Working on my own, no income

ExpatGermany37

Hi all

I live in Germany and am planning to quit my day job to dedicate myself to my writing career.

This means I don’t expect to have any income for at least a year, since finishing my novel takes a long time.

I have been working full time for a company for 6 years, so I expect that I will have some government support for a bit. However, I don’t want to get any other job, and I assume I will need to provide for myself during this time.

What is the best regime in which I can be during this time? Forming a company doesn’t seem to make sense, since I will not be getting income for at least a year.

Thank you in advance!

If you left because you wanted to, you might be out of luck

If you aren't goin to look for a job - seems the same

A quick look suggests you may not get a soggy Euro

Unemployment is given for a time if one is laid-off or sometimes when fired but not if you voluntarily resign and go self-employed. You have to be looking for work. You are 100% on your own. Not to be demeaning but this is a bit naive. And make sure you have the legal situation to do so. Another thing is that say one is on public assitance of any kind, they cannot apply for German citizenship. They want people who provide for themselves.

Another thing is that professional novel writers are very rare. To get published and known and make any real money at it is very difficult. A bit like the kids on teh schoolyard thnking they will grow up to be a star in the NBA. Only there are probably more NBA players making a good sum of money than novelists. Most writers going for a novel are going to do it on the side and have a real job to pay the bills until they gain fame.

As previous posters already explained, you would only get unemployment benefits if you are actually looking for a job. (They'll ask for proof of job applications, etc.!)

Also, social security payments (a.k.a. Hartz-IV) areonly available after you used up almost all of your savings.

You don't need to register a company, because you won't have any business - at least until a publisher accepts your manuscript and starts paying you royalties for sold copies.
